Common issues for the adolescent
As hormones fluctuate, a number of commonly seen ailments and issues can arise.
Body odour increases as sweat gland production increases during adolescence. It typically returns to normal after puberty, however the young person can feel very self-conscious.
Acne and spots result from the skin becoming oilier and the effects of sweating. Some young people appear more prone to acne than others though and the ailment may be combined with poor skin hygiene management.
The adolescent’s circadian rhythm shifts such that the brain secretes melatonin later in the day than in the young child. This results in young people finding it hard to get up and concentrate in the morning, but happy to stay up late into the night. However, the young person still needs around 8 to 10 hours of sleep due to the massive physiological changes occurring.
