Play and social development

We have talked about how social development includes the growth of the child's relationships with themselves and others. The process of learning the skills and attitudes that help the child live alongside others can be seen clearly in their play.

Play has often been described as the child's work. Through play the child will often reveal their understanding of the social world around them and where they see themselves in relation to others. It allows them to create a new world and to explore the adult world by getting over their fears and practising their skills, alone or with others.
