Health E-Learning and Media (HELM) Team

HELM team update 16 June 2017

The team have been incredibly busy as always in the last few weeks. Here is a snapshot of some of our activities:

Curriculum

Alongside day to day development and support of the school’s curriculum, learning technologists have also been looking to the future, to investigate new initiatives and to make sure we are constantly seeking to improve what we do. Some of these activities include:

  • Investigating Office 365
  • Development of 360 degree video resources and exploring the associated pedagogy
  • New modules, Moodle and PebblePad developments
  • Exploring anonymous marking processes
  • Actions to improve blended learning through focus groups in midwifery
  • Development of new CPD online modules, and distance learning guides

The team are also supporting school activities in various ways:

  • Maternal Health Network - creating service user ‘talking head’ videos
  • Coroner’s Court resource
  • Filming the school’s Research Away Day
  • Videoing award winners 

Project work developments

  • We are currently putting together resources for a diabetes project, which involves development of three RLOs which will be released in English, Polish and Urdu
  • Forthcoming RLOs for pharmacies will soon be available, which explore the experiences of under-served patients using community pharmacies
  • Filming for a ‘mental health ward round’ resource is underway
  • A faculty-wide Fire Safety Resource has been launched in collaboration with Safety and Fire Safety experts in the University
  • Further developments on the C2Hear project are progressing to widen the resources out to a US audience
  • The Epiffany Case Study tool, a joint development with medicine, is now in the evaluation phase 

RLO redevelopment project

The following RLOs have now been released onto HELMOpen

In addition, 12 newly redeveloped resources about conducting research will shortly be made available. 

Conferences and Events

Various HELM team members have participated in the following events:

  • Hosted the Faculty E-Learning Special Interest Group (FELSIG)
  • Presented at the Faculty E-Learning Showcase
  • Attended the East Midlands Learning Technologists Spring meeting in Derby
  • Attended the University’s Teaching and Learning Conference
  • Presented at ‘Appy Hour University Learning technology event
  • Attending the UoN SMART Social Media Conference 

We are also pleased to have four papers accepted for the Association of Learning Technology Conference (ALT-C) which takes place in September 2017.

Finally, we are co-organising the 30th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems - IEEE CBMS 2017, which will take place in Thessaloniki, Greece from Thursday 22nd to Saturday 24th of June 2017, and will have a HELM booth at this conference. We are presenting HELM's work on Learning Analytics: "A proposed learner activity taxonomy and a framework for analysing learner engagement versus performance using big educational data".
