Meet Inoshia

Before seeing the patient you have had time to read her emergency department admission notes which record the child's name, age and address and that she has been brought to the emergency department by her mother as she had fallen and hurt her arm.

What is your first impression?

You need to take a height and weight from Inoshia to prescribe pain relief. While Inoshia is walking to the scales you notice she has a unusual walk You also notice that Inoshia is showing signs of intellectual impairment which could be associated with a spinal injury. You decide to enquire further.

You take a history from her mum.

Inoshia had a fall as a toddler, she has had minimal treatment, she was seen by the local visiting doctor. Inoshia has been well and has had very little contact with health services. She has been looked after by her parents and the local community where her mobility has not been a problem. Inoshia is doing well at school.
