To mark International Women's Day 2014 and in advance of this year's 15th Annual Student Human Rights Conference Mind the Gender Gap: The Rights of Women, HRLC presents three fringe events hosted in collaboration with key local organisations to promote women's rights in Nottingham and beyond.
Grandmother what big dreams you have: Storytelling and spoken word
Sunday 9 March 2014, 15.00
The Malt Cross, James Street, Nottingham
In celebration of International Women's Day 2014, come and join us for a story telling and spoken word event with contributions from the School of Story and Art and Nottingham Women's Centre Writers Group.
Brought to you by Nottingham Women's Centre as part of Women's Liberation and After in Nottingham (WoLAN).
Reel Equality: You can't be what you can't see
Live illustration event + Live DJ Stiff Kittens
Tuesday 11 March 2014, 20.30
Broadway Cinema Cafebar, Broad Street, Nottingham
Interactive art/film-tastic fun/breaks and beats, promoting equal media representation of women.
Through creating 'live' a series of fun and entertaining film posters that represent women positively, we seek to challenge the idea that women and girls' value lies in their youth, beauty and sexuality. This message is everywhere and it limits women's aspirations and self-esteem. We seek to change the way women are represented in the media and recognise women's ability to contribute to the world.
Brought to you by Equation: working across Nottinghamshire to reduce and prevent domestic abuse.
Human rights are not for sale: Debating women's rights and sex work
Wednesday 19 March 2014, 18.00
Lakeside Arts Centre, Nottingham
Exploring how stigma, discrimination and violence in the sex trade affect the enjoyment of human rights.
Screening of short films followed by a panel discussion with Daniela Scotece (Chief Executive Officer, POW Nottingham), Professor Julia O'Connell-Davidson (Professor of Sociology, University of Nottingham) and Lucy Binch (PhD candidate, University of Sheffield).
Brought to you by POW Nottingham and the HRLC Human Rights Film Series. Entry is free but please collect tickets from the Lakeside Box Office on the day from 5.30pm.
Free entry to all Mind the Gender Gap Fringe Events.
