Working remotely

Ways to access your University data, systems and applications remotely and when to use them.

Office 365 provides access to core Office applications. Office 365 is accessible from any location, on any device with any internet connection.

When to use it

You use Office 365 when accessing applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, as well as Outlook.

You can collaborate and communicate with colleagues via Teams and also access your files in OneDrive storage.

 
 

cogs-iconUniversity Open Access Applications and Systems

University open access applications and systems can be accessed remotely from any device or location.

When to use it

You can use open access systems at any time you need to and you don’t necessarily need to make preparations in order to use them. This includes purchasing via Business World (web client), managing jobs via Vacancy Manager and accessing the central student records via Campus Solutions.

You can also access Z:, S: and R: drives via files.nottingham.ac.uk

 
 

Remote Desktophouse-icon

A connection to a desktop computer that is located on campus and is switched on to access files or systems.

When to use it

You can use remote desktop to access and use your computer at work from a personal computer at home. This allows you to use all of the systems, applications, connections and files on your usual work computer.

 
 

Virtual Private Network (VPN)globe-icon

A VPN connection provides a secure connection between your device and the University network so that you can access systems which can normally only be accessed when using a device while on campus.

When to use it

If the system access you require is not available via a normal, open Internet connection or you are undertaking activities defined/agreed as business critical, you can use Virtual Private Network (VPN).

This includes reporting sickness via Absence Reporting, payroll via ResourceLink and web previewing via Contensis.

This is a new virtual desktop to access University applications over the Internet when off campus. It offers a similar experience to using a University networked PC.

When to use it

You can use this service to access standard UoN Applications that are not avalable on your personal or work device when away from campus.
