Treaty Law and Practice at the United Nations

Dr David Nanopoulous, Chief of the Treaty Section, United Nations

The United Nations (UN) play a central role in making and administration of international treaties. In this talk, the Head of the Treaty Section in the Office of Legal Affairs of the UN Secretariat, Dr David Nanopoulos, will speak about the UN Secretariat’s responsibilities of registering and publishing all international treaties, as well as on discharging – on behalf the UN Secretary-General – the depositary functions under multilateral treaties. What are the legal issues that arise in the administration of international treaties? What are the pervasive issues of contemporary treaty law? And what role does the UN Secretariat presently play in treaty-making?
