Professor Sue Arrowsmith presents at Loughborough University on accountability mechanisms in sport

On 2 May 2023 Professor Sue Arrowsmith presented a guest seminar at Loughborough University to the students on the Masters in Sport Management programme. The presentation, which formed part of the module on Integrity in Sport, reviewed various mechanisms that exist for stakeholders to hold National Governing Bodies to account based on a case study of swimming. The presentation reviewed the various challenges and opportunities presented by seven different mechanisms: Freedom of Information law, NGB complaint systems, complaints to Sport England or UK Sport, legal proceedings, use of the media, complaints to MPS and complaints to regulators. It concluded with a few ideas for reform to improve the system of accountability, both with the existing mechanisms and through new ones.
