The History of Law and Governance Centre (HLGC) sponsored a student trip to Lincoln for students who had taken module 'LAWW3139: The Creation of the Common Law' over the last three years. This trip provided an opportunity for students to get involved in the HLGC not simply through participating in our general seminars, but in an event planned specifically around their interests. We visited the medieval town of Lincoln, Lincoln Castle, and Lincoln Cathedral, all of which are directly connected to the content of the module.
The students viewed one of the four surviving copies of Magna Carta (and the excellent exhibition at the castle) and explored the site of the Battle of Lincoln, a pivotal event in the Second Barons' War. Will Eves and Sarah White gave short talks on key events and sites throughout the day, and the students also took part in a castle tour offered by the castle heritage team. In particular, students commented on the impact seeing one of the original copies of Magna Carta had (and how small the document was!), and how seeing some of the key legal documents we studied in the module gave them a better understanding of the period and legal development at the time.
