Professor of Medical Statistics in Primary Care, Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences



Carol Coupland studied Mathematics at the University of Exeter, before going on to study for her MSc in Biometry at the University of Reading. She was awarded her PhD by the University of Nottingham.

Medical statistics in primary care, statistical analysis of primary care research databases, design and analysis of epidemiological studies and cluster randomised trials.

Teaching Summary

Staff Postgraduate research student representative for the Division of Primary Care.

Teaches a Statistics course for postgraduate research students in the Faculty of Medicine and supervises PhD students.

Contributes to Evidence based dermatology course.

Research Summary

Carol Coupland's current research interests include:

  • Development and validation of algorithms for prediction of absolute risk of disease
  • Determining unintended adverse effects and benefits associated with commonly prescribed medications
  • The epidemiology and prevention of injuries
  • Treatment of depression
  • Epidemiology of diabetes
  • Design and analysis of cluster randomised trials
