OSCEology programme

The University of Nottingham has hosted a two day workshop in the field of Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE) for Pharmacy educators from across the UK and Europe.  The programme is being delivered by Professor Zubin Austin, Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Toronto.  Zubin is an award winning educator and researcher whose innovations in education and instructional design have been adopted throughout the world. OSCEology is the gold standard for performance-based assessment within health professions to assess competencies and evaluate fitness and readiness for processional practice.  The programme engages participants to identify and define core competences for pharmacists and converts this into practical cases that can be used to evaluate student readiness for practice and to meet the requirement to deliver care in a safe and effective manner.

Professor Zubin Austin believes that "this workshop will provide our participants with an opportunity to jump start the OSCE implementation process at their education institutions as they will come away with 6 – 8 full developed psychometrically reliable cases which are enough to facilitate immediate implementation of a mid-stakes OSCE evaluation".

Matthew Boyd, Associate Professor in Patient Safety and Pharmacy Practice added that "The University of Nottingham is delighted to welcome Zubin back for our 6th cohort of this OSCEology programme which has hugely impacted the implementation of performance based evaluations in Pharmacy Education which in turn has increased the quality of professional competence in the Pharmacy sector. It is wonderful to see such a wide range of Universities represented at this year's progamme with 16 institutions sending delegates demonstrating the growing importance of this field of pharmacy education"

Fiona McMillan, Principal Lead for Vocational Training NHS Education for Scotland who participated in the programme said “I have learnt so much from this course and I have also gained confidence in what we are doing. I now plan to refine the process for development of OSCE scenarios as a next step – Thank you so much! “
