Professor David Needham joins the School of Pharmacy

The School of Pharmacy is delighted to announce the appointment of Professor David Needham to lead our strategic initiative in translational research in cancer.

David is currently Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at Duke University, North Carolina.  David’s research focusses on overcoming the challenges of diagnosing and treating cancer.  David is the inventor of the temperature-sensitive liposomal drug delivery system that was licenced by Duke and is now undergoing Stage III clinical trials for liver cancer, and Stage I trails for a variety of other cancers (breast, liver metastases, brain, pancreatic).

David obtained a five-year Niels Bohr Visiting Professorship to the Southern University of Denmark (SDU) when he established both new links around cancer diagnosis and treatment, and new activity in drug delivery system characterization and development.  The 5-year strategic investment that has brought David to Nottingham for 50% of his time is to replicate and grow similar activities here at Nottingham through the establishment of the physical laboratories for anti-cancer drug delivery systems development and characterization, and collaborative links between the School of Pharmacy, Faculties of Medicine and Life Sciences, Duke, SDU and elsewhere.
