Professor Helen McCabe Speaks to the BBC About Supporting a Home Office Study on Forced Marriage in the UK

Professor Helen McCabe, a leading expert on forced marriage, spoke to BBC East Midlands about research she is co-leading that supports a Home Office study into the prevalence of forced marriage in the UK.

The Home Office is introducing a number of measures to crack down on honour-based abused. Researchers at the University of Nottingham, working in collaboration with colleagues at the University of Birmingham, are developing a data tool to provide more accurate figures on the number of people in the UK affected by forced marriage.

Professor McCabe told BBC news that this study could help establish whether forced marriage is increasing and how policy could be changed to help reduce it: "Unless we know how many people are affected, we can't tell whether the police should change their practice or the Crown Prosecution Service or anything else without some baseline data of how many people are involved".

Helen joined the the BBC News East Midlands Today programme on 3 December to highlight the study. The News item starts at 00:1:10, with Helen's appearance at 4 minutes.
