Join us to discuss the findings from our joint research project investigating the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on modern slavery and human trafficking in Sudan. This event will launch the project report The Impacts of Covid-19 on Human Trafficking in Sudan: A Case Study of Transition.
When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, Sudan was in the midst of a democratic transition, involving the reconstruction of state institutions, development of new laws and a commitment to ensuring the protection of human rights. Yet, despite the commitment, these activities faced the obstacles of economic strain, limited resources and the ongoing need to prioritise peace and stability in the country. Covid-19 exacerbated these obstacles and presented substantial new challenges to improving its anti-slavery response. This research reveals the emerging impacts of the pandemic on modern slavery and human trafficking operating within, through, and from Sudan, and makes recommendations to help mitigate the negative consequences of the virus.
The event will be available in both English and Arabic, with simultaneous interpretation.
