Work with the Rights Lab on modern slavery PhD research projects

(Expression of Interest Deadline: November 1, 2021)

The deadline for the 2021 funding competition has now passed. The next Midlands Graduate School Doctoral Training Partnership studentship competition for funding (fees and stipend) for Social Science PhDs will open in autumn 2021 for PhD studentships beginning in October 2022.

The Midlands Graduate School makes an annual award of a large number of studentships to outstanding applicants across the Social Sciences. The studentships are linked to disciplinary and inter-disciplinary training pathways. At the University of Nottingham these are Applied Linguistics, Area Studies, Digital Society, Economic & Social History, Economics, Education, Mental Health & Wellbeing, Management & Business Studies and Finance, Political Science & International Relations, Psychology, Social Policy and Social Work, Socio-Legal Studies, and Sociology,

The awards include the +3 programme (funding for a three-year PhD if you have already met the majority of the core social sciences research methods training requirements) or the 1+3 programme (funding to include an integrated Masters programme that precedes the three-year PhD). All awards are available for study part-time. Eligibility requirements are listed here.

The Rights Lab (Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Nottingham) is the world’s largest and leading group of modern slavery researchers. If you are successful in your funding application, we look forward to welcoming you into our community of modern slavery researchers—which includes current ESRC DTP PhD students. Alongside opportunities in your School and the ESRC DTP training programme, our Rights Lab community includes regular workshops and visiting speakers, and opportunities for paid research assistant roles (within the limits set for ESRC-funded PhD students and with supervisor permission).

We are actively seeking potential candidates who would like to develop and submit studentship proposals on the topic of modern slavery. Our team will help you develop your ideas, offer feedback on your proposal drafts, and connect you with supervisors.

We welcome all inquiries and all proposal ideas on the topic of modern slavery: please contact rightslab@nottingham.ac.uk with a short description of your PhD idea and a brief CV by November 1, 2021.
