Juan Carlos Ríos-Prieto is a Rights Lab Research Fellow in Slavery and War with the Leverhulme Centre for Research on Slavery in War, a collaborative centre between the University of Nottingham and King's College London. His focus in the Leverhulme Centre is on comparative politics, particularly hybrid governance in war-affected zones and non-state armed organisations engaged in slavery practices. His research expertise is at the intersection of political science and philosophy. He holds dual PhDs: in Political and Social Sciences from the Université catholique de Louvain (Belgium), and in Human and Social Sciences from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (Colombia). He participates in several research project consortia on Participatory Democracy and Peacebuilding with European Union institutions, his book, "Participatory Governance in War Zones: Navigating Citizen Participation in the Shadow of a Civil War" is forthcoming with Routledge in 2026, and he is developing articles on war, rebel governance, slavery, and democracy.
