The Modern Slavery Risk GEOBarometer: Supporting Transparency in Supply Chains and Due Diligence

EO

Rights Lab project lead: Doreen Boyd
Funder: UK Space Agency
Duration: October 2021 - March 2022
Programme: Measurement and Geographies

We built and demonstrated a spatially explicit multi-data informed risk assessment tool that assesses exposure to modern slavery risk in global businesses and supply chains. Unlike any related tool on the market, the GEOBarometer has as its unique selling point the use of Earth observation (EO - especially from spaceborne platforms) data (in addition to other geospatial and non-geospatial data)  — to see and quantify the risk of slavery from space. Our enterprise-grade solution use AI to analyse EO imagery, identify (geolocated) markers to modern slavery, and screen business relationships for connections to those markers. This information supports companies in prioritising risk mitigation activities.
