Dave Hampton, founder and CEO of Camstent, visited the University of Nottingham on Friday 20th October to give a talk on the catheter being developed by Camstent using materials from research at Nottingham.
Prof Morgan Alexander set the scene, introducing the background research which led to the discovery of a material which resists bacterial attachment. Dave Hampton described how this biomaterial is being used to coat a medical device - a urinary catheter. He explained the translational steps to the audience from the EPSRC Programme Grant in Next Generation Biomaterials Discovery and the wider University. Dave focused on commercial fitness, testing, production, regulatory and clinical challenges, whilst mentioning the entrepreneurial aspects involved. Camstent are currently working towards getting the catheter CE marked.
Dave's talk was part of a series of translational/clinical talks organised by the EPSRC Programme Grant in Next Generation Biomaterials Discovery, aimed to demonstrate the potential applications in the areas of Biomaterials Discovery. Speakers discuss key issues/challenges relating to their area of interest and discuss how new materials offer solutions.
