SNSBI Spring Conference 2019

Description
The 27th Annual Conference of the Society for Name-Studies in Britain and Ireland will take place at the University of Nottingham, 26–29 April 2019. The conference will open with a paper from John Beckett, Professor of English Regional History at the University of Nottingham, who has published extensively on the history of Nottingham, Nottinghamshire and the East Midlands. On Saturday evening, the SNSBI will join with the Institute for Name-Studies to host the biennial Cameron Lecture. The lecture is held in memory of Prof. Kenneth Cameron, one of the foremost scholars of English place-names. This year's lecture will be given by Lesley Abrams, Emeritus Professor of Early Medieval History and Emeritus Fellow of Balliol College, Oxford, Honorary Research Fellow at the Department of Anglo-Saxon Norse and Celtic, Cambridge, and Honorary Professor in the Centre for the Study of the Viking Age at the University of Nottingham, who will talk about her work on Normandy's Scandinavian names. Paper and poster proposals on any aspect of name-studies in Britain and Ireland are welcome. MSRG AGM and Winter Seminar 2018

Description
The 2018 AGM and Winter Seminar of the Medieval Settlement Research Group will take place on Saturday 8 December 2018 at the University of Leicester.This year's Seminar will incorporate two sessions, a morning session with student presentations on landscape and settlement studies in Britain, Ireland and Europe, and an afternoon session on the theme of settlement in the Danelaw. Confirmed speakers for the afternoon session include Prof. Dawn Hadley, Prof. Julian Richards, Prof. David Stocker, Dr Stuart Wrathmell and Dr Rebecca Gregory.

E C Quiggin Memorial Lecture

Dr Jayne Carroll will be delivering the annual E. C. Quiggin Memorial Lecture organised by the Department of Anglo-Saxon, Norse & Celtic, University of Cambridge, on Thursday, 29 November 2018. Jayne's lecture, 'Speaking fluently: watery place-names and the medieval English landscape', will be based on her work on the Flood and Flow project.

Troublesome Elements Conference

The University of Leicester's Medieval Research Centre's 2018 Conference 'Troublesome Elements' is taking place at the George Davies Centre, University of Leicester, on Friday 23 November. The conference focuses on the four elements—earth, water, air, and fire—in the medieval period. Dr Susan Kilby (INS Research Fellow) will be talking about 'Troublesome Earth': Medieval Peasants, Sustainable Farming and Elemental Theory', and Elisabeth Magin (CSVA PhD student) will be giving a paper, 'Taming Fire, Taking Revenge - Medieval Runes and Magic'.
