Poet, essayist, historian, travel-writer, biographer, translator and polemicist, Robert Southey (1774-1843) was one of the most controversial of all Romantic period writers.
This conference – held in Keswick, Southey’s home for 40 years – celebrated the life and works of a high-profile experimental author, who was centrally involved in literary culture in Britain in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It coincided with an exhibition at the Keswick Museum and Art Gallery devoted to Southey.
The conference was organised in association with the Universities of Lincoln, Loughborough, Nottingham and Nottingham Trent, and with the support of the British Association for Romantic Studies, the Midlands Romantic Seminar and the Society for Renaissance Studies.
