What is a personal tutor?

A personal tutor is a dedicated staff member that has been trained to support all aspects of your student journey to ensure you reach your full potential and to help you develop professionally and personally as a medical student and to prepare you for your future career.

You will be allocated to a personal tutor for the whole of your course and you are expected to meet with them at set times throughout your studies to review and reflect on your progress and to set developmental goals.

How can a personal tutor help me?

A few things your personal tutor can help you with are:

  • Supporting you in encouraging your self-appraisal, reflection and goal setting

  • Acting as a gateway to the wider support available in the School of Medicine and the university

  • Providing reference for employment and act as a professional 'friend'

There are also other staff members that can support you alongside your personal tutor such as:

  • Senior tutors who are there for any issues you do not feel able to discuss with your personal tutor for whatever reason

  • Director of Student Wellbeing who oversees everything relating to welfare provision and promotion and is there to help in complex situations
