Welcome from the Head of School, Professor Rachel Fyson
Welcome to the School of Sociology and Social Policy – I am delighted that success in your previous studies now means that you can join us for the next stage in your academic journey.
I hope that your social science degree programme, with its range of taught modules and learning opportunities beyond the classroom, will challenge, stimulate and inspire you during your time at the University of Nottingham. Our degrees are designed to not only give you a set of skills and knowledge which will be highly attractive to future employers, but also to help you develop your own vision of the world – both as it is and how it might be.
The world we live in is complex and fast-changing, throwing up many challenges for us as individuals but also for local, national and global society. In this context, social science has an important role to play in helping to make sense of social change, to reflect a diversity of viewpoints and to provide the education and research which will make a positive contribution to our future. As a social science student, you will contribute to that future, and studying here will help you to become part of the change you want to see. These are exciting times for studying social science.
I hope that you enjoy your time with us, that you meet new people, embrace opportunities for new and different experiences, and discover fresh understandings of the world we share.

Message from Rachael Clawson, Director for the Centre for Social Work
Dear social work students,
Whether you are new to the Centre for Social Work or returning to study with us, I would like to start by offering a very warm welcome for the new academic year. The Centre for Social Work team are really looking forward to welcoming you and are excited about what this new academic year will hold.
Social work is a rewarding, diverse and challenging profession, underpinned by a rich and dynamic history of advocating for social justice. Now, perhaps more than ever, there is an unprecedented need for passionate, motivated and ethical social workers. We are thrilled to be part of your journey with you.
New social work students who would like to get started with preparing for the academic year can find resources including DBS checks and important funding information.
You could also spend some time familiarising yourself with this webpage, which is where you will find all information you will need about the programme, wider university support and much more.

Recording your name can help people pronounce it the way it should be said. You’ll find that a number of the staff have done this through NameDrop and added it to the end of their signature in emails. It can be used anywhere you share your contact details. Students are encouraged to include their NameDrop link in their emails.
