Learning from Foreign Terrorist Fighters

Radicalisation and de-radicalisation

Dr Azfal Ashraf is co-investigator of a EU funded study, hosted by the Research Centre for Religious Studies (RCRS) in Kyrgyzstan.

This research aims to address the broad range of social, economic and environmental factors that led to the radicalization of foreign terrorist fighters (FTF) in Kyrgyzstan’s prisons. The investigators will determine why and how individuals chose to become FTF and why they decided to return to their country.

The research will explore vulnerability to the radicalisation that leads to violent extremism among FTF with a focus on rooting and understanding radicalisation and the appeal of terrorism. The research will undertake case studies to provide recommendations to prevent, reduce and stop processes of radicalisation that lead individuals towards violent extremism.
