TOTEMM - a three-year ERASMUS plus HE Grant funded project
It is important for midwifery students in higher education to have an understanding of global health practice and intercultural sensitivity.
The current mobility model excludes large numbers of students from engaging in exchange programmes such as the Erasmus programme. For some students, their personal situation makes it impossible for them to take up opportunities to live in another country for an extended period of time.
We urgently need to develop and evaluate new, more inclusive, ways to widen opportunities in transnational learning and support the development of intercultural sensitivity.
The aim of the TOTEMM project is to promote equity, social inclusion and participation of non-mobile midwifery students studying in England, Italy, Estonia and the Netherlands.
This will be achieved through the creation and implementation of a new inclusive mobility model, which combines virtual and physical activities to provide a more accessible exchange experience. A secondary aim is to investigate if these activities can develop intercultural sensitivity.
It was great to network with international colleagues, find out about midwifery in different countries and bring our ideas together to create a brilliant resource. It has the potential to improve so many students’ experiences and bring an exciting opportunity to students who are unable to travel.
