Overview

Ear surgery can be a real pain in the....ear.  This one-day Masterclass will review surgical diseases and procedures for the entire ear, from the tip of the pinna to the depths of the tympanic bulla.  Indications, investigations, and complications of these surgeries will be reviewed.  Time and focus will be placed on practical cadaveric surgery to build confidence and skill when performing lateral wall resection, total ear canal ablation, lateral bulla osteotomy and ventral bulla osteotomy.

  • Lateral wall resection
  • Pinna resection
  • Total ear canal ablation and lateral bulla osteotomy (TECA-LBO)
  • Ventral bulla osteotomy (VBO)

Learning objectives

  • Review investigation and approach to otitis externa from a surgical perspective
  • Consider options for aural haematoma
  • Recognise indications and limitations for lateral wall resection (LWR) and total ear canal ablation and lateral bulla osteotomy (TECA-LBO)
  • Be familiar with and spend time practising LWR and TECA-LBO
  • Understand the indications for ventral bulla osteotomy (VBO) in the dog and cat and perform this procedure
