Overview

This problem-based interactive course aims to boost the delegates’ confidence in decision making, when performing the Equine Pre purchase examination. Using real case material the delegates will be challenged to give sound advice to potential purchasers. How worried should we be about that sarcoid, is the cardiac murmur significant, can the horse see, is it lame? Will the horse be suitable for the client and how should we report our findings?

Topics to be covered:

  • Understanding your client’s needs – arranging the PPE. Avoiding conflicts of interest – the ethics of the PPE.
  • How to perform a PPE.
  • Common problems that occur – skin, heart, eyes and limbs.
  • Extra procedures focusing on endoscopy and radiography.
  • Writing a PPE report.

Learning objectives

  • Be able to conduct a full 5 stage prepurchase examination
  • Understand how to manage potential conflicts of interest
  • To give sound advice on the commoner skin, cardiac, ophthalmic and orthopaedic conditions regularly encountered during a prepurchase examination
  • To be able to write an accurate and helpful report which also help protect against allegations of negligence

Required delegate attributes

This course is equally suitable for younger equine practitioners who wish to start performing prepurchase examinations and for more experienced colleagues who wish to reinforce their skills.
