Overview
This course is designed to equip small animal, first-opinion clinicians with a structured approach to commonly encountered emergency and critical care presentations. The programme includes lectures and workshops on triage, stabilisation and clinical scenarios that allow delegates to apply the day’s learning in real-world contexts.
Point of care ultrasound (POCUS) will be discussed, but a follow on day is available dedicated to it’s utility and practical skill development.
Topics to be covered
- Effective communication during stressful situations
- Systematic approach to triage and identification of shock
- Management of common emergencies including dyspnoea, collapse and trauma
- Be effective at team management during periods of heightened stress.
- Be able to effectively, and rapidly, triage the emergency patient.
- Be able to identify and stabilise common causes of dyspnoea, collapse and trauma.
- Be able to manage the bleeding patient effectively.

This course is aimed at first opinion clinicians, but is suitable for anyone with an interest in improving their triage and emergency management skillset.
