Overview

This highly practical day offers vets in-depth training in the surgical management of perineal hernias. With step-by-step demonstrations and cadaver-based practice, participants will learn how to approach these challenging cases with confidence. The day will cover relevant anatomy, patient selection, peri and postoperative care and surgical repair techniques. This is ideal for general practitioners looking to strengthen their surgical skills and improve patient care in this complex condition.

Topics to be covered

  1. Clinical signs, medical and surgical management of perineal hernias
  2. Simple through to more complex hernia presentations
  3. Surgical approach focusing on internal obturator flaps
  4. Additional surgical techniques for complex cases (semitendinosus flaps, use of mesh)

Learning objectives

  1. Understand the relevant anatomy and pathophysiology of perineal hernias in dogs
  2. Recognise appropriate cases for surgery and plan perioperative management to optimise outcomes
  3. Develop hands-on surgical skills through cadaver-based practice, including key repair techniques
  4. Identify and avoid common pitfalls and complications, ensuring safe and effective patient care

Required delegate attributes

This course is aimed at confident intermediate and advanced level surgeons who have encountered perineal hernia cases in practice but have not attempted surgical management, or who would like to refine their technique with these cases.
