Overview
This is a course aimed at providing the basic knowledge and understanding of the key principles of thoracic surgery, with a mix of lectures and practical sessions. Candidates will learn the key approaches of the thoracic cavity as well as some of the more commonly performed procedures in the thorax, such as a lung lobectomy and pericardiectomy.

- Equipment and instrumentation
- Anesthesia and analgesia techniques
- Thoracostomy tube placement
- Thoracic surgical approaches
- Lung lobectomy
- Pericardiectomy
- Surgical conditions of the thorax including pneumothorax, pyothorax, patent ductus arteriosus
After attending this course, you should have revised and gained both core and new skills in thoracic surgery. You should be able to:
- Understand the key principles of anesthesia relevant to thoracic surgery.
- Place a thoracostomy drain in a safe and confident manner.
- Safely perform an approach to the thoracic cavity (lateral thoracotomy and median sternotomy).
- Perform a lung lobectomy in a safe and confident manner.
- Perform a pericardiectomy in a safe and confident manner.
- Understand the key principles when managing a range of thoracic surgical conditions, including spontaneous pneumothorax and patent ductus arteriosus ligation.
