Overview
Over one highly practical day (minimal lecturers, maximum practical time) you will learn/re-cap basic orthopaedic surgical skills that are necessary for everyday basic orthopaedics.
This is a practical, workshop-led course. Each skill is introduced with a step-by-step demonstration, before participants practice the technique either individually or in pairs. You will receive continual feedback and assessment throughout the day.
Topics to be covered
- Identification, safe and correct handling of orthopaedic equipment including power tools
- Basic fracture classification
- Techniques for internal fixation including correct application of
- K-wires
- Tension band
- Bone screw, plate screw and positional screw
- Lag screw
- Plate application to bone; dynamic compression, neutralisation & bridging modes
- Confidently handle and know how to use orthopaedic instruments and power tools
- Understand basic fracture classification
- Understand which bone/fracture stabilisation technique to use; when and how
- Understand correct screw application; when and how
- Understand correct plate application; when and how
- Understand correct pin and tension band application; when and how
Required delegate attributes
Any veterinary surgeon with an aptitude and interest in orthopaedics who wants to take the next step (or refresher steps) for basic orthopaedic techniques that are used and applied in all orthopaedics.
It is best suited to new graduates, veterinary surgeons who have not done orthopaedics for a long time, or veterinary surgeons who wish to refresh the basics.
