Overview
This practical course will focus on local anaesthetic techniques in the cat and dog which can be easily employed in general practice. The course will provide an overview of local anaesthetic agents and perineural anaesthesia including peripheral nerve blocks for dental surgery. It will also include an introduction to epidural and spinal anaesthesia and fascial plane blocks. The delegates will enjoy the opportunity to practice techniques including blind approaches to peripheral nerve blocks, epidural and spinal anaesthesia, and a fascial plane (transversus abdominis) block with ultrasound guidance.
Topics to be covered
- Pharmacology of local anaesthetic agents
- Principles of perineural, fascial plane blocks, and epidural/ spinal anaesthesia
- Perineural blocks, including for dental surgery, using a blind technique
- Epidural and spinal anaesthesia
- Introduction to ultrasound guided techniques
- Management of local anaesthetic toxicity
- Constant rate infusions for partial intravenous anaesthesia (PIVA)
- Understand the properties of available local anaesthetic agents
- Understand the benefits and risks of peripheral nerve blocks, fascial plane blocks and epidural/spinal anaesthesia
- Select local anaesthetic agents at appropriate volumes/ doses for common surgical procedures
- Perform local anaesthetic blocks (including for dental surgery) using a blind technique
- Perform epidural and spinal anaesthesia
- Perform a transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block with ultrasound guidance
- Know how to manage cases of local anaesthetic toxicity
- Choose anaesthetic agents for partial intravenous anaesthesia, calculate dose rates and prepare/ administer the infusion

This course is designed for veterinary surgeons with all levels of experience including those wanting to incorporate local anaesthesia into their practice and those wanting to refine or learn different techniques. The course would also be of value to those veterinary surgeons undertaking further professional qualifications in small animal surgery or anaesthesia.
