Project Overview
Several related projects were spawned from public art commissions being undertaken by Derek Hampson in and around Nottingham. The common aim was to explore the processes through which geographic representations of a neighbourhood can be captured, assembled and re-presented in a public context. In part the techniques were designed to increase our understanding of how members of the public describe the same area in different ways and relate to an emerging interest in vernacular geography in the context of Geographical Information Science. Exercises were undertaken at public events, in schools and through specially organised sessions. A forerunner to the main project was the creation of an interactive CD entitled 'Millenium Map' which included historical maps, photographs and anecdotal descriptions of land use change in the area captured on video. Re-presenting these in a pubic context in the area, and feedback from this event, led to an interest in exploring the graphical and textual language used by residents to describe the geography of their local environment.
