Biography

Dr Zhu is a lecturer in sustainable energy technology at the Department of Architecture and Built Environment, the University of Nottingham. He has a high level of expertise in building energy performance simulation, tri-generation (electricity, heating and cooling) powered by solar energy, membrane dehumidification cooling technology, supercritical working fluid CFD study, building energy pile foundation/ground source heat pump. He has participated many research projects funded by the EPSRC, Royal Society, British Council, EU FP7, Horizon 2020 and industry. He has published over one hundred journal and conference papers. Dr Zhu's research has had the primary aim of reducing CO2 emissions in the building sector.

Expertise Summary

Dr Zhu is a lecturer at the Department of Architecture and Built Environment. He has a high level of expertise in applied thermodynamics, heat transfer, refrigeration, heat pumps, sustainable/renewable energy technologies and energy efficiency technology, and has published over 100 journal and conference papers. Dr Zhu has been involved in many research projects funded by the EPSRC, Royal Society, British Council, EU FP7, Horizon 2020 and industry, and has been granted two patents. He has worked on an EPSRC funded research project, 'A novel porous ceramic/heat pipe cooler', and set up a theoretical model for the novel cooler as well as designed a simulation program to predict its performance. Dr Zhu has also worked on another EPSRC funded research project, 'Strategic research for sustainable energy technology in buildings'. His research covered three sustainable energy technology areas: i) Heating/cooling/power generation system using PV concentration for integration in high-rise buildings; ii) Experimental investigation of energy storage for evacuated solar collectors and iii) Development of a clothes drying heat recovery device. Dr Zhu has also worked a Low Carbon Trust funded research project, 'Technology assessment for radically improving the built asset base'. Dr Zhu's research has had on the primary aim at reducing CO2 emissions in the building sector. He is currently carrying out teaching and research work associated with building services, renewable and sustainable technologies and energy efficiency technology, and supervises six PhD students.
