Biography

Mike Hawkins is an Assistant Professor of Architecture at the University of Nottingham and a module convenor in Tectonics. Since 2019 he has been working in the Design + Build studio unit, helping deliver Early Childhood Development Centres in Limpopo, South Africa, designed and built by Nottingham students in partnership with local NGO the Thusanang Trust. He is an experienced self-builder and advocate of the transformative power of live-build projects for those involved. Mike spent over 10 years in architectural practice, working on private and public projects up to £8.7m in value and has been teaching at universities across the midlands since 2011. His research interests focus on the relationship between culture and technology, and on the social and environmental implications of a financialised urban environment.

Expertise Summary

Mike has extensive experience in the technical design and delivery of construction projects. He has particular expertise in leading students and volunteers through all stages of live-build programmes. Mike is a lightweight timber frame enthusiast but also has experience building with straw bale and masonry.
