Current Research

Brownfield sites, such as former manufactured gas plant (MGP) sites, have the potential to be turned into newly developed homes, protecting the countryside from being built on. However, a wide variety of contaminant compounds are present within the soil of these sites. Human health risk assessments are used to determine an estimate on the risks associated to these contaminants, calculated by the different bioavailability pathways. One of the major contaminants of concern at MGP sites are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), many are carcinogenic and mutagenic. The dermal pathway is the second highest pathway to contribute to the overall exposure of high molecular weight (HMW) PAHs, however limited research has been conducted on dermal absorption of PAHs from soil.

Alison's current research is to investigate the impact of soils physiochemical properties upon the PAHs dermal bioavailability. By examining soils through a dermal in vitro exposure simulation method, the results should indicate the most influenceable soil physicochemical properties controlling dermal bioavailability.
