In the first year of my PhD, my research has centered around Rwanda's reconciliation villages. I have explored the ways in which these villages have become expressions of the state's vision of post-genocide Rwanda, alongside their function as objects of peace and forgiveness.
My Undergraduate dissertation in Liberal Arts (Geography) orbited around the 'Statue Wars' debate. By exploring Britain's cultural landscape, and the politics of space more broadly, I sought to demonstrate how imperialism had become naturalised within Britain's commemorative fabric.
Utilising this interdisciplinary foundation, my MRes thesis explored the Rwandan genocide and photography. By critically analysing what it means to photograph atrocity, my research was concerned with the nature and ethics of photographic representation. I sought to establish what method(s) of representation, if any at all, were able to overcome the moral ambiguities of photojournalism and other forms of photographic production.
