PhD Title: Climate Change Mitigation: Learning from the past to unlock the hydropower potential of the Derbyshire Derwent Catchment.

Based in Belper, Derbyshire at the heart of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site I can see the untapped Hydroelectric Power of a number of former Mill sites in the Derbyshire Derwent catchment. Whilst some key sites continue to generate HEP in the wheel pits built in the 1780's today there are sites no longer harnessing the power and along with other volunteers set up a Community Energy organisation, ADVyCE, to reinstate HEP at one of these sites in Ambergate, Derbyshire. Unfortunately due to changes in legislation, regulation and government support our project, along with many other similar HEP projects in England failed to progress in 2018. Looking for sources of renewable electricity generation to support climate change mitigation efforts this research will be looking at the historic development of these sites (problems and solutions), learning from the past to find solutions to unlock the hydropower for the future.
