Description

This panel discussion will mark the 10-year anniversary of the Rana Plaza factory collapse in Bangladesh. We will be joined by academic experts and activists working on labour rights, working conditions and consumer capitalism to reflect on the 10 years since the Rana Plaza disaster.

The discussion will be held as a hybrid event, and a Teams link will be sent out to registered attendees. All attendees are also welcome to join us in person in Room D04, Monica Partridge Building, University Park Campus.

Speakers:

Mayisha Begum (Co-Founder, Oh-So-Ethical)

Mayisha is a Labour, Social Movements and Development MSc graduate from SOAS. They are the co-founder of Oh So Ethical (@ohsoethical), a blog that aims to address exploitation, labour rights, and corporate greed, particularly within the garment industry.

Professor Muhammad Azizul Islam (University of Aberdeen)

Muhammad Azizul Islam (Aziz) is Chair in Accountancy and Professor in Sustainability Accounting & Transparency at the University of Aberdeen Business School. Aziz is widely recognised internationally as a leading sustainability accounting researcher. He investigates some of the specific sustainability accounting and transparency issues including (but not limited to): corporate human rights measures, climate change accounting, social audit and corporate anti-bribery measures.

Tarek Islam (Fashion-workers Advice Bureau Leicester)

Tarek Islam is Senior Community Engagement and Outreach Worker at Fashion-workers Advice Bureau Leicester (FAB-L), an independent organisation which provides advice on worker's rights within the textile and fashion industry.

Dr Klara Polackova Van der Ploeg (University of Nottingham)

Dr Klara Polackova Van der Ploeg is Assistant Professor at the University of Nottingham School of Law, specializing in international law and international dispute settlement. Dr Van der Ploeg's work focuses on transformations of international law with respect to collective non-state entities; international legal regulation and dispute settlement of global coordination problems; interface between private law and international law; international investment law; business and human rights; and international law in domestic courts. Dr Van der Ploeg is also a dual-qualified attorney-at-law (State of New York; Czech Republic) and has advised States and private parties on a wide range of public international law and international dispute settlement matters.

Dr Neema Begum (University of Nottingham)

Neema Begum is Assistant Professor in British Politics in the School of Politics and International Relations at the University of Nottingham. Neema is a political scientist researching ethnic minority voting behaviour, political participation and representation. Neema currently co-convenes the Political Studies Association (PSA) Race, Migration and Intersectionality specialist group.
