She has been named one of The Root's 100 top African American "achievers and influencers" and has received Harvard University's Abramson Award for Excellence and Sensitivity in Undergraduate Teaching. Among her many publications, her book Laughing Fit to Kill: Black Humor in the Fictions of Slavery was published by Oxford University Press, and she is currently working on a book about immigration, expatriation, and exile. Professor Carpio also joined members of the Centre for Research in Race and Rights for a seminar discussion earlier in the day.
