Description

We’ve got a CineClub special coming up on Monday 13th March! SPLAS is very pleased to welcome one of Brazil’s foremost scholars of the screen cultures of indigenous communities, Dr Christian Fischgold (Universidade do Cuando, Angola, and Sorbonne Université, France). We’ll be screening Os Guardiões da Floresta/Zawxiperker Ka’a (The Guardians of the Forest, 2019), a documentary film named after a group that was legally formed to protect the Caru Indigenous Lands against armed incursions by miners, loggers and cattle ranchers. The film’s directors, Jocy and Milson Guajajara, use film-making to defend against and prosecute violations of indigenous land rights, and to project an independent vision of their communities’ culture, history and future. Dr Fischgold will introduce the film for us, and afterwards we’ll host a Q&A where students will have the chance to ask questions and learn out more about this fascinating and important piece of film-making.

The film is 51 minutes long, with dialogue in Guajajara and Portuguese, and English subtitles. As always: all are welcome, and there will be popcorn!
