Paul Beardsley from Disney Research, Zurich will be delivering a seminar on Wednesday 8 June 2016:
Mobile Robots for Entertainment / Mobile Robots for Ecosystem ScanningPaul Beardsley – Disney Research, ZurichWednesday 8 June – 1.00 pmExchange Building LT1
This talk will give an overview of two connected threads of research in the Computer Vision Group at Disney Research Zurich. The first thread is in mobile robots for entertainment and I'll show videos of Pixelbots robot swarm, Beachbot the robot beach artist, Skye a controllable helium blimp, and Vertigo wall-climbing robot. Robots are now appearing in the everyday world, starting most visibly with the Roomba in the 2000s, and extending through to the recent growing market in consumer drones. I'll describe our work in robot localization, collision avoidance, robotic manipulation and robot-human interaction.
The second and related thread is in using mobile robots with sensors such as cameras and depth cameras to scan natural ecosystems in order to create 3D models of terrains and vegetation. I'll describe work on scanning of corals in collaboration with marine scientists.
Dr Paul Beardsley is a Principal Research Scientist and group leader of the Computer Vision Group at Disney Research Zurich. His researchinterests are in robot vision and scene modelling.
