Last week saw Dr Alan Chamberlain (Mixed Reality Lab) attend COOP 2014, the 11th International Conference on the Design of Cooperative Systems, in Nice, France. Dr Chamberlain was delivering a keynote entitled Community Concerns: Life, Locality and the Nature of the Internet as a ‘Critical’ Infrastructure at the workshop, The Internet as a Critical Infrastructure: Socio-Technical Issues. The workshop developed out of some shared interests in the EU funded Internet Science network of excellence http://www.internet-science.eu/ in particular JRA7 Internet as a Critical Infrastructure: Security, Resilience and Dependability Aspects.in particular JRA7 Internet as a Critical Infrastructure: Security, Resilience and Dependability Aspects.

Dr Chamberlain was also invited to sit on the ‘Politics of Design’ panel, where he delivered his position piece One Size Fits All?: the Politics of Engagement before discussing issues with the panel, and then being open to questions from the audience.

Besides the keynote and panel, Dr Chamberlain had also been part of an international team from the University of Nottingham, Aberdeen University and IIT Bombay that produced the research publication presented at the conference below.

Papangelis, K., Chamberlain, A., Velada, N., Corsar, D., Sripada, S., Nelson, J. and Beecroft, M. (2014) People, Plans and Place: understanding and supporting responses to rural public transport disruption, COOP 2014, the Eleventh International Conference on the Design of Cooperative Systems, Nice (France), May 2014. Springer, ACM Library referenced.

Dr Chamberlain said: “It was a great opportunity to present some of the research that we’ve been carrying out at Nottingham, we have a track record of designing, building and researching cooperative software systems. Understanding such systems is important for the Digital Economy, as it has the ability to positively transform both business and society. Dr Andy Crabtree, Prof Chris Greenhalgh and myself have been discussing lots of the research issues that I talked about for a while now, and it was good to use one of the leading cooperative design conferences as a platform to voice these discussions.”

The research on which these presentations were based was/is funded by RCUK research grants EP/J000604/1, EP/J000604/2, and EP/G065802/1
