The University has been made aware of a large-scale malware delivery campaign that is sending spam emails around the world with malicious attachments which, when opened, will attempt to infect the user’s computer with, for example, Emotet trojan or Locky ransomware.
Information Services are taking actions to protect the University, but in the meantime, please refer to the advice below.
Be vigilant – what to look out for
The spam email may reference a ‘payment’ and could be received from a variety of email addresses. The message may contain an attachment, consisting of a series of letters and numbers, plus a date. DO NOT click on this attachment as it will attempt to download a document containing a malicious virus.
If you think you have downloaded a suspicious file, do not hesitate to contact the IT Service Desk or contact your local IT support team. General advice to avoid being caught by phishing attempts is featured below.
