Final-year medical student, Rebecca Bennett, has been awarded a scholarship by the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation to spend a week at the Betty Ford Clinic in California, USA, learning about substance misuse. The award will cover all travel and accommodation costs of the placement in June.

"I am looking forward to seeing how they manage substance misuse in America compared with the NHS," Rebecca said. "I did a week in the drugs and alcohol service in Nottingham as part of my psychiatry placement so am interested to see the differences, not only in the techniques used but also the people and how they react to treatment. Whilst on the placement you get the opportunity to shadow addiction treatment patients and family programme participants as well as getting some classroom instruction."

The US placement will be in addition to a six-week elective she will be doing at Arnold Lodge in Leicester.

"I hope to be able to learn from the placement and, as substance use disorders are so prevalent, I hope to be able to use the programme in my future medical practice to effectively address all aspects of the disease, from assessment to treatment and recovery issues," she said.
