Why love (research) matters

The scope and methodology of Critical Love Studies

Bio/abstract

Michael Gratzke is Professor of German and Comparative Literature as well Associate Dean for Research in the Faculty of Arts, Cultures and Education at the University of Hull. His research focus is to establish Critical Love Studies (CLS) nationally and internationally. CLS researchers from disciplinary backgrounds such as clinical psychology, sociology, history and cultural studies aim to further  our understanding of all phenomenological categories of love in an inductive research process which emphasises the interplay of pattern and deviation in the way people and communities experience and represent close social bonds. Michael focusses in his work on romantic love (or erotically charged intimate love).

In this workshop, he will give a presentation on CLS in general and his methodology in particular which utilises linguistic and narrative approaches from cultural studies and social sciences.

Juan Anzola is a PhD candidate in Sociology at The University of Nottingham. His current research examines how transnational same-sex couples construe and experience intimate life and a sense of home and belonging. In this talk, he will use ‘love’ as a starting point for discussing how the couples in his study negotiate their identities, personal choices and kinship relations ‘here’ and ‘there’.
