Stroke Rehabilitation

Will you help stroke survivors and their carers rebuild their lives?

The issue

An estimated 15 million people worldwide suffer from strokes each year. Five million will die and another five million will suffer a permanent disability. Strokes cost the NHS £2.8 billion a year.

Life after stroke

Stroke is common, devastating and life changing. Although most people survive, these survivors struggle with mobility and speech, depression, cognitive problems and everyday activities. They frequently say their biggest challenge is adjusting to life after stroke and reintegration into society.

Stroke rehabilitation is about helping survivors get back to a normal life by restoring independence and personal dignity.

Our solution

We’re working to help stroke survivors overcome the life-changing and sometimes devastating effects of stroke. Stroke rehabilitation research at the University has an international reputation for helping survivors adapt by relearning old skills or acquiring new ones, and by embracing social, emotional and practical support.

The Nottingham Stroke Research Consumer User Group is made up of stroke survivors who work with University researchers to develop new stroke rehabilitation interventions. This innovative approach won a Nottingham Reach Out Award in 2008 and Ossie Newell, who pioneered the group, has been awarded an MBE for his achievements.

Our impact

Strokes cost the NHS £2.8 billion a year. At least 450,000 people are severely disabled as a result of stroke in England alone.

Close collaboration with survivors, service providers and commissioners allows us to translate our research findings into clinical care. This helps rebuild the lives of stroke survivors and their carers. It gives survivors back their independence and dignity by reducing the impact of their disability, helping them reintegrate into society, and by enabling them to reach their full potential. Additional funding will allow us to further improve survivors’ quality of life, while having a direct impact on clinical practice nationally and worldwide.

What will your Impact be?

Will you help stroke survivors and their carers rebuild their lives?

Your support for Stroke Rehabilitation will make a genuine difference to our work in improving the everyday life and rehabilitation of stroke patients. If a relative or friend has suffered from a stroke, you will understand the difficulties faced by stroke victims and their carers.
