Prof Efim Zelmanov (UCSD) will give a colloquium talk in the School of Mathematical Sciences on Tuesday 6 September at 2pm, Room A17 on the 'Asymptotic theory of finite groups'. There will be discussion on the asymptotic properties of limits of finite groups and their connections with Combinatorics and Number Theory.
Prof Efim is known for his work on combinatorial problems in nonassociative algebra and group theory, including his solution of the restricted Burnside problem. He was awarded a Fields Medal at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Zürich in 1994, as well as receiving the André Aisenstadt Mathematics Prize, and the Collège de France Medal. He is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a foreign member the Royal Academy of Spain (Real Academia Española), a foreign member of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology (KAST), and the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (Academia Brasileira de Ciências).
