Title: Gauge symmetry breaking via derived geometry

Abstract: In this talk I will explain how old ideas in quantum field theory (symmetry breaking and the Higgs mechanism) can be interpreted in a new way using a modern "derived" view of geometry.  I will talk about this derived perspective can be brought to bear on quantum field theory, explain how to understand some important physics constructions in this framework, and conclude by describing how this perspective leads to some novel examples.  This is joint work with Owen Gwilliam.

1 hour virtual talk, followed by informal discussion.

All are welcome!
