Abstract:
Rational conformal field theory or, more specifically, its algebraic axiomatisation in the form of rational vertex algebras is a well studied source of modular tensor categories. These enjoy many nice properties including a duality structure called rigidity. However, not all vertex algebras are rational and hence the categories of modules need not admit rigid duality structures. The natural duality for this more general class of vertex algebras is called Grothendieck-Verdier duality, which I will discuss in this talk together with some instructive examples and recent results. No prior knowledge of vertex algebras will be assumed.
