Medieval archaeology of northwest Europe from c. AD 400-1300, with particular reference to settlements, landscapes and coastal/maritime-oriented communities.

Archaeology of the Near East, especially the greater Persian Gulf region, with fieldwork concentrated on Arabia and Iran. Archaeometallurgy - the study of ancient metallurgical remains and metal artefacts to reconstruct ancient technologies and exchange systems. Expertise spans the Neolithic period to the Iron Age (c.6500-500 BC). Ancient Iranian metallurgy, the first Neolithic communities of highland Iran and the burial archaeology of Arabia.
